Murasame's Song: Dialogue

- Is she back yet?

Yûgiri is sitting cross-legged on the gallery overlooking the South Gardens. He looks up from the book he is reading:

- Who?

Kagekiyo does not answer. They have the same image in their minds, separately: Murasame in her blue robes, pouring rice wine in a jade green cup.

- Come here.

He puts his hand out to Kagekiyo -- who just stands there, staring, so he touches his ankle, the bone under the silk. "Sit down", he says, "you're making me dizzy, sit down", and, finally, Kagekiyo squats besides him, hands dangling between his knees, chin down, head cocked towards him but not looking at him -- his fighting stance.

- Suppose she cannot find out...

- She will, hisses Kagekiyo. Depend on it; the Minister cannot resist a nice chat, and we both know how skilled your sister is with her mouth.

Yûgiri is getting good at this. The glitter of hatred beneath closed eyelids, the bunched fists under his sleeves, the sudden flare of violence only a high ringing in his ears -- all invisible, swiftly, skillfully. He turns away from Kagekiyo, half-smiling, slow, shoots him a sidelong glance:

- Well, I know, at least.

He's won -- this time.
